Session Descriptions

Session 1 - Social Strategy Analysis and Strategic Networks
The world is in the midst of a grand experiment with social media and online social networking platforms. While some organizations have experienced tremendous success, far more have struggled to realize the potential of these new ways to engage with customers, partners and stakeholders. What accounts for these differences? In the first session of this workshop, we will explore one essential element – having a sound social strategy. What does that take? First, we must have social impact, meaning we create value for users by helping them connect with each other. Second, we must have strategy impact, meaning we create value for the organization by either lowering costs, increasing customer willingness to pay, or a combination of the two. During the first morning, we will work through a step-by-step process for building a social strategy and practice using the framework and process on our own organizations.

Session 2 – Big Data and Decision Making and Leveraging Social Data
Learning how to design a sound social strategy is one thing; understanding if the strategy actually has its intended impacts (social and strategic) is another. Like other sources of "Big Data”, the abundance of "social data” means that a new set of skills is required to leverage a potential gold mine of information. This session is aimed at building those skills. The session will explore the ways in which organizations currently use social data and suggest ways they should use data going forward. We will explore the importance of using social data not just to understand "what happened” or "what will happen” but to understand "why things are happening” and "what should be done about them”. We will emphasize the difference between what data say and what data mean and review common difficulties in interpreting data. After discussing data analysis tools that overcome these problems, we will finish with an exercise using social data tools.

Session 3 – A New Framework for Leadership and Leadership in Action
What does it take to be a great leader? What can we learn for the most effective leaders in history? And how can we apply those lessons to our specific context in association management? In this session, we will examine leadership through the ages, in order to understand the most important lessons we can each take away about effective leadership – how leaders effectively manage, lead and engage their organizations. Then, we will dive in to an exercise on effective leadership, illustrating these leadership theories in action, with a bit of Shakespeare!

Session 4 – Integrative Thinking Overview and Integrative Thinking in Action
Integrative Thinking is a core skill that underlies successful decision-making, no matter the context of the decision maker. Whether we are making decisions in our daily lives or in our jobs, many of the problems we face demand we engage with complexity, ambiguity and clashing ideas. How do we typically deal with all of that? Most of the time, we choose. We settle. We compromise. But there is another alternative. Integrative thinkers seek to resolve the tension between opposing ideas, to create new and better answers. As both a problem-solving process and a mindset, Integrative Thinking can help leaders find creative solutions to the problems we face every day. This session will serve as an introduction to Integrative Thinking and offers leaders hands-on experience with a process and tools for creative problem solving.
